1HW Round Up #10
We've almost made it
Unbelievable but true: I’ve been writing these goofy little posts for almost a year. Of course, almost no one cares about them except for my mom (thanks Mom), but it is a nice way to feel like I’m actually doing something with my life. Also, I think staying in the habit of writing is great for your mental state and is good practice if your daily grind is in an industry that involves a sh*tload of writing like mine.
Best of all, when people ask me:
“Hey man, have you heard of Substack?”
I can say,
“I already have a Substack and I’ve been writing that sh*t for a year you unwashed pleb.”
Seeing the reverential, awe-filled eyes of these late-to-the-party mud farmers as they realize that I am literally years cooler than them is a special feeling.
Kiss the ring, peasants
Substack has definitely become more known amongst the commoners and it’s pretty hip nowadays to talk about your favorite newsletter over some $9 I.P.A. and $25 eggs benedict (being trendy is f*cking expensive). A friend of mine wants to write a daily Substack about what he dreams every night. He often tries to strike up a conversation about how last night he was having a dream where he was taking his driving test but the car kept filling up with shrimp and then his mom told him he had to go live with his sister in London but then she had a baby and he had to stay in Africa and work in a blanket factory but then he broke his ankle when he stepped on an orange… I would love to be able to say I’ve already read it and I don’t need to hear it again.
Anyways, just thought I’d let you know that what I’m doing is obviously incredibly important, impactful, cutting-edge, and, in essentia, very very good.
Enough deep cuts. On to the hits!
The Backseat Lovers - Maple Syrup
Remember that guy who’s always telling me about his dreams in way too much detail? Well, this is his latest song recommendation. It does have a sort of dreaminess about it that is fitting if you know the guy. The tempo and near-harmony of the vocals pair very nicely with the stripped-down riffs. Sad little indie boy vibes abound.
Pepe Deluxe - Before You Leave
A very cool instrumental I put on when I’m working and I want to press the keys on my keyboard, like, really hard. One of my coworkers actually complained about my foot tapping the other day because I was listening to this tune in the office. This track was apparently in a famous ad for Levi’s jeans, but I never saw it. I bet they sold a load of pants, though.
Tal Wilkenfeld - Corner Painter
Very dope blues-rocky things happening here. If Johnny Cash was singing on this one I wouldn’t blink an eye. Tal Wilkenfeld, however, is a bit of a legend herself. A big chunk of her discography is— surprisingly for those of us who’ve never heard of her before— instrumental music led by her insane skills on the bass. She’s played with Mick Jagger, the Who, Jeff Beck, Prince, and Eric Clapton, need I go on? Her voice is pretty rugged and this track in particular stands out.
